Twelve-year-old Tyler sat on the edge of his bed in the large house outside of Dallas, staring quietly at the floor. His father had passed away two years ago, leaving the vast family estate, the trucking company, and the million-dollar life insurance policy behind. Since then, his stepfather, Arthur Vance, had taken complete control over everything. Arthur was a tall, smooth-talking man who wore expensive beige suits and carried himself like he owned the entire town. Tyler never liked Arthur, but his elder sister, Sarah, had always tried to keep the peace for Tyler's sake.
Sarah was twenty-two and had worked tirelessly at the local community hospital as a nurse. She was the only person who truly cared for Tyler, making sure he did his homework and making him dinner every night. But over the last six months, things had changed drastically. Arthur had begun managing all the family finances, locking down the bank accounts and pushing Sarah out of the family business. Sarah had started asking questions about their father's original will, which had mysteriously gone missing right around the time Arthur took over as the sole executor of the estate.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Tyler overheard a heated conversation coming from Arthur's home office. The door was cracked open just an inch, and Tyler stood in the hallway, holding his breath as he listened to his sister speak with a fierce tone he had never heard from her before.
Sarah: I know what you did, Arthur. You altered my father's trust fund documents before he died.
Arthur: You need to watch your tongue, Sarah. You have no proof of anything, and nobody will believe a young nurse over me.
Sarah: My lawyer already requested the original bank records. The truth is coming out this Friday, whether you like it or not.
Arthur: There won't be any court date, Sarah. I suggest you walk away now while you still have a life to live.
Tyler felt a cold shiver run down his spine as he saw Arthur's face darken with pure malice. Sarah stormed out of the office, her hands shaking, and grabbed Tyler's hand to take him to the local diner for dinner. That was the last normal evening Tyler ever spent with his sister. Two days later, Arthur suddenly announced to the entire family and town that Sarah had fallen ill from a rare, aggressive infection while working at the hospital and had tragically passed away overnight in her sleep.
Tyler refused to believe it. Sarah had been perfectly healthy, bright, and energetic just hours before. When Tyler tried to view her body at the local funeral parlor, Arthur stopped him at the front door, claiming the casket had to remain sealed per medical regulations due to the nature of her illness. Arthur quickly arranged a massive, private memorial service at a grand civic hall downtown, inviting local politicians, wealthy business partners, and city judges to show off his apparent sorrow and generosity.
