A Hidden Picture Revealed

At that exact moment, the thick double oak doors of the ballroom swung open wide. Richard Vance walked into the room wearing a tailored dark tuxedo. He was a tall, powerful man in his early fifties with silver hair and a very stern face. Richard was a famous CEO and real estate developer who controlled a massive business empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He had spent the morning in his executive boardroom discussing a big court lawsuit regarding his late father's living trust fund and family trust estate. He looked exhausted, but his posture was firm as he walked into the bright daylight of the room.

Richard: What on earth is going on in here? Why is everyone screaming?

Victoria: Richard, darling! Thank goodness you are finally down here!

Richard: Why is the entire household standing around doing nothing?

Victoria: We just caught this low-class maid stealing my priceless jewelry!

Richard stopped in his tracks and looked at the mess on the marble floor. He saw the gold watches, the heavy diamond necklaces, and the crying young woman on her knees under the big American flag. Richard was known as a stern but fair man who hated dishonesty above all else. He had worked hard his entire life to build his massive estate and always treated his employees with respect as long as they were honest with him. Seeing a maid crying on the floor in front of fifty wealthy party guests made his blood boil with frustration.

Richard: Is this true, young lady? Did you take these things from my wife?

Elena: No, sir! I swear I did not put those jewels in my bag!

Victoria: Do not listen to her, Richard! Her purse was filled with my diamonds!

Richard: Let the girl speak for herself, Victoria.

Elena: Someone planted those expensive jewels in my bag while I was cleaning the study!

Richard walked closer to the mess on the floor, his heavy polished dress shoes clicking on the smooth marble. As he looked down at the pile of gold, his eyes caught the small silver locket lying open near Elena's knee. The silver surface was scratched and old, completely different from the expensive, custom-made diamond jewelry surrounding it. It looked like a cheap trinket from twenty years ago, but something about the shape of the metal made Richard's heart skip a beat.

Richard: What is this silver piece doing here?

Victoria: It is just more junk she stole from the guest rooms, Richard!

Elena: No! That locket is mine! It is the only thing my mother left me!

Richard slowly kneeled down on the bright marble floor, ignoring his clean silk tuxedo pants. He reached out his hand and gently picked up the tiny silver locket. He held it up into the natural daylight coming from the tall window to look at the small picture inside. As his eyes focused on the face in the photograph, his entire body went completely stiff. His jaw dropped open, and the color drained from his face until he looked as white as a sheet. His hands began to shake uncontrollably, and he almost dropped the piece of metal onto the floor.

Richard: Where did you get this?! That is completely impossible!

Elena: My foster mother gave it to me before she passed away in the hospital!

Richard: Who is the woman in this picture?! Tell me right now!

Elena: That is my biological mother, Margaret! She died when I was just a baby!
