Daniel brought a glass of warm water and a soft wool blanket, wrapping it around Elena's shivering shoulders as she sat on the couch. Her hair was horribly uneven, ragged on one side where the brass blades had sheared through, but Daniel looked at her with pure gentleness. He sat on the low wooden coffee table directly in front of her, taking her small hands into his own warm grip.
Daniel: Are you in any pain? Should I call a doctor to check on the baby right now?
Elena: No, the baby is moving... I think we are both okay physically. Just shaken up.
Daniel: I am so deeply sorry, Elena. I should have been down here protecting you from her.
Elena: You came in time, Mr. Sterling. No one has ever stood up for me like that before.
Daniel: Call me Daniel. Please. We are far past formal titles after today.
Elena looked down at her lap, feeling a sudden surge of shyness despite the intense trauma of the morning. For months, she had buried her growing feelings for Daniel, knowing the massive divide between a wealthy estate owner and a hired maid. But Daniel had always treated her with a tender kindness that differed wildly from how Valeria treated staff. He would often linger in the kitchen just to ask about her day, or bring her fresh fruit when he noticed her tiredness during early morning shifts.
As Daniel reached down to pick up the lock of dark hair from the floor to clean the mess, his hand brushed against something else lying under the edge of the velvet sofa cushion. It was a thick manila envelope that had fallen out of Valeria's designer bag when she stumbled backward from the force of the slap. The envelope was unsealed, and several legal documents were spilling slightly out onto the floorboards.
Daniel frowned, picking up the heavy paper file. He noticed his own family name printed in bold dark letters across the top cover. Valeria had been digging through his father's old private office drawers earlier that morning while claiming to use the powder room, a fact that instantly made Daniel suspicious.
Daniel: What was she doing carrying my family's private legal papers in her purse?
Elena: I saw her coming out of your father's study right before the brunch started, but I didn't think to ask.
Daniel pulled the papers completely out of the brown sleeve, his sharp eyes scanning down the densely typed legal lines. The document was an old draft of his late father's final life insurance policy and estate division, dated just weeks before the senior Mr. Sterling had passed away three years ago. As Daniel read through the third page, his eyes widened in total shock, and his breath caught tightly in his throat.
Daniel: This... this cannot be right. This changes everything we thought we knew about the estate.
Elena: What is it, Daniel? Did she steal something valuable from you?
Daniel: She didn't steal money... she was trying to hide an official court trust fund structure.
He raised his eyes from the white paper, staring at Elena with an expression of pure wonder mixed with deep anger at what had been kept hidden. The legal document clearly listed a second beneficiary to the Sterling family estate, a child born from a secret legal marriage his father had maintained years ago in a neighboring county. The document gave the full name of the mother and her only daughter, along with a distinct birthmark description and family heritage details that Daniel knew all too well.
