The bright sun shone through the massive glass windows of the central New York skyscraper early on a Monday morning. People in expensive black suits walked across the polished white marble floor with coffee cups in their hands. They were all busy rushing to their morning meetings inside the biggest corporate headquarters in the entire city. Nobody noticed the elderly woman in the blue janitorial uniform wiping down the long glass walls with a dirty yellow cloth. She worked quietly in the background, keeping her head down so she would not bother any of the rich executives walking past her every single minute.
Julian Vance walked into the lobby with three top legal assistants walking right behind his heavy footsteps. He was thirty years old, handsome, and wore an expensive tailored suit that matched his role as the new company chief executive officer. His real estate trust fund had just bought this sixty-story building for two hundred million dollars during a massive city foreclosure auction. He looked around the giant room with serious eyes because he expected perfection from every worker inside his property.
As Julian walked toward the executive elevators, his eyes suddenly caught the elderly janitor who was struggling to lift a heavy grey water bucket. She wore thick grey work gloves that covered her arms all the way past her elbows on a warm summer morning. Julian stopped in his tracks, feeling a strange pull in his heart that he could not explain to his assistants.
Julian: Why are you wearing those thick grey gloves inside this hot building today?
Martha: I am just doing my daily cleaning job, sir. Please do not mind me.
The elderly woman kept her face turned away from him, her voice trembling slightly as she held the heavy mop handle tightly with both hands. Julian took two slow steps toward her, stepping off the carpet and onto the white marble floor. He felt his heart beating fast inside his chest for reasons he did not yet understand.
Julian: Look at me when I am speaking to you. You look like you are overheating under those thick clothes.
Martha: I am fine, sir. The management requires us to wear full gear while working near the chemical soap supplies.
Julian knew that was not a real building rule because he had personally reviewed the entire maintenance contract just yesterday. Something about her gentle tone sounded familiar, like a distant memory from a childhood dream that he had almost forgotten over the past twenty years. He reached out his right hand, intending to help her stand up straight after she slipped slightly on the wet floor.
Julian: Let me assist you with that bucket before you hurt your back on the marble.
Martha: No, please do not touch me, sir. I am just a dirty worker and you wear a very fine suit.
When she pulled her arm back in fear, her sleeve caught on the sharp metal edge of the rolling bucket rack. The fabric pulled back two inches, exposing a small patch of thick, reddish skin that looked heavily damaged. Julian froze completely, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes locked onto that tiny patch of skin. He dropped his expensive leather briefcase straight onto the white floor without caring about the sound it made.
Julian: Show me your arm right now. Pull up that glove immediately.
Martha: Please, sir, I am just a poor janitor. Do not make trouble for me or take away my job.
Julian did not listen to her pleas. He dropped frantically to his knees on the hard white marble floor right in front of the bucket. His corporate assistants gasped in total shock as their billionaire boss knelt in the middle of the lobby. Julian reached out with trembling hands and pulled back the grey work glove on her left arm, revealing deep, severe burn scars stitched across her entire forearm from her wrist to her elbow.
